Saturday, March 31st, 2007

Alright, here’s some gradient roses I drew on a whim which is a preview of what will go on the new theme.

So anyway,
smash con There’s a new anime/manga convention coming out in Sydney on August 18 at the UNSW roundhouse [how convenient for me xD I have a perfectly legit excuse to go hahaha]

SMASH!, the Sydney Manga and Anime Show, is a one-day celebration of anime, manga, games and popular culture. Created by fans for fans, our aim is to hold a fun convention that allows everyone to enjoy the show and festivities. We hope to encourage you all to showcase your talent and passion.

So what is it really? Well, its an alternative to Animania who’s prices have gone through the roof over the years.

And after next week its a one week break. Yheey! However, the Monday I come back, will be when my pols1017 minor essay shall be due, and the Tuesday is Part A of the Quantitative Methods A (QMA) assignment, and then the week after, tuesday will be the accounting midsession exam; and friday both microeconomics and qma. Eek.

Oh and there’s a quiz next week for QMA T_T

EDIT: And here’s another gradient – I label it winter xD since winter is coming..

I’m not feeling so good..

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

I’m not feeling too good. Think I’m coming down with a cold. I guess its because I pulled an allnighter to go and check through my pols1017 assignment back on thursday night. Then having to be at uni to hand it in took quite a bit of time, so thus it meant that I had to rush the tasks through and I suppose exhaustion has started to weaken my already weak immune system again :/

Blast. After 4 months of rest, stress is going to start to wear me down again. Especially after that measly one week break for easter!! Because Weeks 7 and 8 are paaaackedd.
Week 7 has the QMA assignment and the minor essay, Week 8 has all those midsession exams. Eeek.

In other news, I joined EMb. => eruditemb.com Would I suggest the place? Well……Perhaps. As long as there’s less of some pretentious dweebs from nu/mb. Sure, most of the people at nu/mb were alright, but as for some? Well, hello to pseudo intelligence. Afterall, with web design being your ONLY qualification, where that’s all you’re aiming at, and that’s all you’re capable of [and its not all that spectacular either], you’re not exactly.. brilliant as you pretend to be, are you?
shrug
I suppose what spurs me is the putting down of people’s sites with a voting contest based on what is the worst site.
Fair enough, the sites might be lousy, but they DO own that space, and you are but one minor little visitor! Lets examine all those online marketing websites with gigantic h1 titles, and very basic primary colours, made entirely on.. TABLES. But certainly, they still make hundreds in profit from those cheesy sites.

Geez. Like an article? /Anything/ on the web? Does that make goatse and tubgirl and all those sites something of article quality? After all, they certainly get “readers”. Not for long, but there’s plenty to get the point across. Wonder what then.

However, I suppose what I’m annoyed about is that some people there used to criticise your very words. You can’t even sporadically post with a lapse in judgement. The vaguest reference that you posted inaccurately, that you are not even making your main point, gets ripped to shreds.

Hmm.. annoyance put into words. Just a rant. ‘Message Boards’, as opposed to ‘Forums’, I had thought, were less formal. More like a conversation with some depth to it. And in comparison to other topics on the board that really ARE purely chatter[as if I wanted to hear of your substance use], but by the more frequent members, well… that place wasn’t particularly brilliant. But since it was an offset of Vortex? Pft. I suppose I shouldn’t have put any effort into visiting at all.

ECON1101 Homework
• This week’s readings: Txt 5, 6, 7
• Next week’s readings: Txt 9
• Discussion Question 7:
Use the Supply and Demand model to illustrate the effects on competitive market equilibrium, of the imposition of a per unit indirect (sales) tax on a particular commodity.
Explain the factors that determine the amounts by which the equilibrium price and quantity of the commodity will change as a result of the imposition of the tax. Use your model and your knowledge of economic theory to consider the following questions:
a) Suppose an indirect tax is levied on an across the board basis, at an equal proportionate rate on all goods and services. Will the tax result in an equal proportionate increase in the market prices of all goods and services?
b) Will the imposition of an equal across the board sales tax be neutral in its effect on the pattern of consumption demand? Does such a tax affect consumers equally?
c) Suppose the government decides to limit the imposition of indirect taxes to particular commodities. If indirect taxation is levied on particular commodities, to what type of commodities should it be applied? What criteria should governments use in apply indirect taxation?
• Discussion Question 8
Use a diagram like Figure 7.8 of the text to illustrate and explain the “deadweight loss” from the imposition of a tariff on the imported substitute for a domestically produced product. Use your diagram to compare the effect of the tariff with a policy of providing the same benefits to domestic producers by means of a taxpayer funded per unit subsidy.

• Review Questions
1. The demand curve for a product is given by the equation
Qd = 600 – 40 P
If the price of this product were to fall from $5 to $4, calculate the quantity demanded at each price and the gain in consumer surplus resulting from the price fall
2. Text Chp 5 Q5, 6
3. Use the Supply and Demand model to analyse the effect of the setting of a minimum support price for an agricultural product (set above the competitive market price.) The government buys up any excess supply at the support price and dumps it in the ocean. Use your diagram to illustrate the “deadweight loss” from this policy.

ECON1202 Homework

a) What is its book value after 7 years?
b) What amount of depreciation is charged in year 8?
2. KZB 8.4 Problem 10
Equipment costing $30000 is estimated to have a useful life of 20 years and a scrap value of $4000. The depreciation schedule is prepared using the sinking fund method at 10% p.a. Find:
a) The amount in the sinking fund at the end of 10 years
b) The book value of the asset at the end of 10 years

7. HPW 8.2, Problem 37, p.402
• SELF STUDY QUESTIONS
1. Computer equipment costing originally $ 25,000 is depreciated over 5 years using the straight-line method. The residual value after 5 years is $3000. Calculate (a) the annual amount of depreciation (b) the book value of the equipment after 3 years.
2 A dentist buys a piece of equipment for $20,000 and expects to be able to resell it in 5 years’ time for $8,000 when he will upgrade to a newer model. He uses the constant percentage (or declining balance) method to depreciate the equipment, with a rate of depreciation which yields a book value equal to $8,000 at the end of 5 years. Calculate the depreciation for the fourth year after purchase of the equipment, the book value at the end of three years, and the accumulated depreciation at the end of three years. (Calculate the annual rate of depreciation correct to 4 decimal places).
3. A company uses the constant percentage (or declining balance) method to depreciate a machine bought for $265,000 at a rate of 15% p.a. Draw up a depreciation schedule for the first three years showing depreciation charged for each year, book value at the end of each year and accumulated depreciation.
